619 Geraldo (Gerhard) DANNEMANN «aus 614» , 22.04.1851 Bremen, 11.04.1921 Hamburg, Apr 1921 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, N: Cemiterio de Sao Joao Baptista, [I6918], Founder of the Dannemann Cigar Cy. in Bahia, Tabakwarenfabrikant in Brasilien , N: Founder of the Dannemann Cigar Company, Brazil., ev., After serving in the Franco-Prussian war, Gerhard removed to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1872. A year later he began production of tobacco in the city of Sao Felix in a small factory. By the end of the 1870’s, he had become a very successfull producer of cigars. By 1912, the company had approx. 4000 employees in 4 factories.
In the 1920’s, the company merged with Stander & Co. Today one of the attractions in Sao Felix is the Centro Cultural Dannemann along the riverfront.
Geraldo founded the residential area Littenweiler, now part of Freiburg/Breisgau at the edge of the Black Forest. He went to Germany often because of ill health and other reasons. He built many houses some of them are still in one street built 1911.
He also founded a hospital for wounded soldiers. One street is named Dannemann Street.
