1378 Jacob Ephaim Georg August HABICH «aus 1370» , 24.12.1837 Kassel, Hessen, Germany, 29.01.1886 USA, 1887 USA, Mission City Memorial Park, [I4911], merchant, retail grocer with general merchandise, The son of Johann Martin (1794-1872) and Maria Amalia Habich, nee Menke (1802-1884), Jacob Ephraim Georg “August� was born in 1837 in Kassel, Hesse, Germany.
He emigrated at the age of eighteen to the United States and moved directly to California and settled in Santa Clara, Santa Clara County,and in 1880 was a retail grocer in his brother’s store there.
Earlier, in 1863, he returned to Germany, married in 1864, and then returned to the states.
Five years thereafter, he constructed his own store in Santa Clara-100 by ten by 40 feet.
In 1880, his wife was forty-one; his children-Martin was fifteen; Walter was eleven; Bertha was eight.
He also ran a steam feed mill there. Built in 1879, with a daily capacity of ten tons, the Santa Clara Feed Mill was built of brick and covered an area of sixty by forty-nine feet. August owned it but rented it to F.E. Farmer.
August was a member of the Santa Clara Verein and served as secretary and president of that group.
In the mid-1850’s, Germans started settling in Santa Clara and the numbers rose steadily in the 1860’s. These immigrants were very influential in the town, and the Verein was established- reputed to be the oldest extant such organization in northern California.
Built entirely by private subscription, the building was frescoed and tastefully decorated. By 1881, there were forty-five members. Exercising, physical fitness, dramas, musicals, dances and graduation exercises were a few of the attractions. Many of the town’s old timers recalled that the Verein was the “in� place at the beginning of the 20th century.
Jacob Ephraim Georg “August� died on January 29, 1886, or January 31, 1887, at about forty-nine years of age in Santa Clara County, California.
“A. Habich, a well-known merchant of Santa Clara, died of apoplexy about six o’clock. His widow and one of his sons are on a visit to Germany.�
August is buried in Block 116, Mission City Memorial Park, Santa Clara, California. His wife Augusta is also there as is their son Walter.
His brother Adolph Habich (1839-1869) is buried in Block 14 as is an infant Habich (1866-1866).

Born in Kassel, August came to America in 1855 when he was eighteen and removed directly to California where he settled in Santa Clara where he worked in his brother’s store.
In 1863 he visited Germany, married, returned to Santa Clara and established his own business. In 1876 he constructed a substantial store, one hundred and ten feet by forty in dimensions on the site of the former adobe building. Later he purchased the large steam feed mill from E. Cramer where he transacted a large, profitable business.
His probate papers are on record in the Santa Clara County Cennections.

A widow as of 1886-7, she lived with her sister, Mrs. Anna Praeg, also a widow, and her four children, plus Walter Habich (1869-1913). Anna was the wife of William Praeg; they resided at 1056 Filbert Street, San Francisco.
Anna was born in Germany in August, 1850, and had immigrated to America in about 1880-1883.
Augusta passed away there at the age of eighty-five in San Francisco.
