Otto entered the service of the Norddeutsche Lloyd (NDL) about 1867 and worked his way up to a Captaincy, which position he held for fifteen years. He had the command of the steamship �Main� and later of the “Fulda�. The steamer left New York for Bremen on August 12, 1885. Two days later owing to foggy weather, the Captain was twenty-four hours on the bridge. On August 16 he fell dead of heart desease.
His two younger boys accompanied him on his last voyage.
