1536 *guy HERLIN, CALLED EBROUIN, LORD OF HERLIN , France?, France?, [I953], N: My 20th Great Grandfather, Hoston de Saint-Omer is regarded as the father of the Herlin, Herlyn, Herlign family. The family has been traced back to the castle of St. Omer in France which at that time was part of the Netherlands.
St. Omer, Pas-de-Calais department, northern France, had a monastery founded by St. Omer in the 7th century.
In the 9th century, it was a fortified settlement. These were demolished during the last decade of the 19th century and boulevards and new thoroughfares were put in their place.
In time it became a prosperous center of the wool trade with England from the 11th-13th centuries.
From the 13th-15th centuries, there was a church and then a cathedral there (1563-1801).
Today St. Omer is a town and commune of Artois, sous-prefecture of the Pas-de-Calais, 68 kilometers northwest of Lille, France, on the railway to Calais.
CONT
Hoston's armor is a golden beam on a red background.
In 1158 he was made a member of the Dignitaires de l'Order-the Knights Templar.
The Knights Templar was the most powerful of the Christian military orders and was formally known as the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon.
CONT
His seventh son was named Herlin de St. Omer after the larger farms he inherited-Herlin-le-sec, Herlincourt, and Herlin-vert (which eventually disappeared). The first two today are villages in northern France. He named himself Seigneur (Lord) de Herlin and thus established the family surname that came into full use in the 12th century.
Jolente de Herlin and her husband Eustache de St. Omer, used her family name because she and her son Obert inherited the Herlin villages near Arras and St. Pol, France.
The family enjoyed prosperity during the period from 1100-1300 from the ownership of land and small villages in the north of France.
The men were mostly knights, some monks. The knights were expected to contri bute to the cloisters and were their protectors for places such as Mount St. Eloi (later the scene of a disastrous battle in WW I), near Arras.
Geoffrey de Saint-Omer (c.1090-1150) participated in two Crusades to the Holy Land. However, many of these knights had difficulty recovering from the cost of the battles they fought and their travel expenses.
With the marriage of Lady Avoye, the owner of the Herlin villages, the land eventually reverted to other families. In addition, battles and quarrels with other knights and additional participation resulted in diminishing ownership of land and thus income.

In 1978 the Herlin genealogy was reprinted and enhanced with data gained from many members of the extended family.
In 1998, 180 family members gathered to celebrate the thousand years of the Herlyn family. It was the 16th such meeting since it was established in 1935.
The original genealogy from 1669 has been translated from ancient French into German.
