16.08.1894 Bremen, [I7304], Entrepreneur , N: a cotton merchant and entrepreneur, ev., He studied in Bremen, learned the cotton business at Manchester with the Bremen-born exporter Johann Frerich’s company De Jersey and Cy. He went to Moscow as assistant to the company’s agent Franz Holzhauer in 1840. In that year he created the first power driven cotton mill in Russia.Two years later, the British ban on the export of cotton machinery, imposed in 1774 to protect the country’s head start in technology, was lifted, permitting the manufacture of cotton to expand in Russia.
He used English credit to construct and outfit mills with English equipment.
In 1852, he founded L. Knoop and Cy. in association with the De Jersey and the machinery manufacturer Platt Brothers of Oldham, Manchester.
5 years later, he built the largest cotton spinning mill in Europe on the island of Krenholm at Narva, Estonia, which employed 4500 workers. This plant had nearly hald a million spindles driven by water-power.

However it paid low wages, even though it introduced a health insurance scheme and supplied employees with homes and schools.
In time, he was respnsible for equipping 1897 cotton mills on Russian territory. He came under attack, however, for retarding industrial development by the russian Technical Society. This was because he relied on English machinery and provided the fatories with English managers, technicians, and supervisors.
In 1877, he was made a baron by Tsar Alexander II.
He passed away at St. Magnus, Bremen, 1894, at the age of 73. A city park created from hs estate is named in his honor.
