He was a member of the Union, Racquet, and Tennis Clubs, the Germania and Jockey Clubs, the Down Town Association, the Circle Colon Cervantes and the Deutscher Verein.
Speck, the grandfather of the German Ambassador, had been a cattle drover who accompanied his steers to England where he discovered a fortune in beef. He then took his money into Saxony where he purchased the Sternburg estate. Made a knight and a Baron, he was succeeded by his grandson who wed the beautiful Miss Langham of Kentucky whose family had no real fortune. From the post of Consul General in India, Baron Speck had been made Ambassador to the United States.
