He witnessed the marriage of Emil Poppe and Emma Sturmwald, April 14,1869, Hoboken, Hudson Cty. NJ.
Letter of Wolfgang Walter, Naval Architect, Bremen, who stated:
“ ... In this atmosphere, a certain William Poppe, residing in NY., had somehow learned that Thomas Lee of Quebec City had such a ship under construction which was for sale. She was the bark ‘Meteor’ and on July 27 of 1855 Gustavus Poppe of Bremen signed the contract. .... Shortly thereafter, William Poppe of NY purported to act as agent for the well-known Bremen shipowner Anton Papendiek, who as he stated, had contracted with Lee for the same ship. The Bremen Consul at Quebec, Mr. Ryan, who had to issue the preliminary documents for the ship, was under strict orders by the Bremen Senate to issue the interim ship’s pass necessary to sail the ship to Bremen for final registration only to a Bremen citizen, which William apparently was not. So Ryan asked Messrs. Papendiek for confirmation that Willam was indeed acting on their behalf. Papendiek flatly denied this ... The builder’s certificate for the ship, issued by Lee on sept. 11, names Gustav Arend Poppe (1821-1878) of Bremen as owner. ......
According to the ownership contract for the ship, dated Dec. 21, 1855, Gustav Poppe finally owned 3/4 of the ship and Papendiek 1/4.
The ship, however, was unlucky. The Bremen Register Book closes: In accordance with an advice by the owners, dated Jan. 15, 1858, the ship ‘Meteor’ is apparently lost, since they declare that after the last voyage they never again had news from the ship. ....
