Almost all of these were soldiers in the service of the Dutch East Indies Company. The male-female ration among them who settled there in the early centuries was 20:1. Thus, there were few German foremothers. Those German veterans who did marry almost always had spouses of Dutch or later Dutch-German mixed descent.
