At the age of 15, Marie was sent to Germany to be educated in Stuttgart Katharinenstift during 2 years. Then she returned to her parents in Brooklyn. There she met in the autumn of 1868 Johann Smidt. He married him on 5.1.1869. In Bremen, they waited for their first child before emigrating to Calcutta.1873 she returned with her family to Bremen and devoted herself in raising her six children (one was born in Calcutta) and the support of her husband in his social and charitable functions.
