4185 John Monroe Van VLECK «aus 4125» , 04.03.1833 Stone Ridge, Ulster County, NY, 04.11.1912 Middletown, Middlesex County, CT, [I332], N: NYU (A.B.) and Wesleyan University (A.M.) (LL.D.), American mathematician and astronomer after whom was named the Van Vleck Observatory at Wesleyan University and the crater Van Vleck , N: Professor of mathematics and astronomy; crater on the moon is named for him, (My 8th Cousin, three times removed)
From 1853-1857, John was adjunct professor of mathematics at Wesleyan University in CT.
From 1858-1904, he was professor of both mathematics and astronomy there and then professor emeritus from 1904-1912.
In the years 1890-1903, he served as vice-president and from 1896-1897, he was acting president. While at Wesleyan he appointed future President Woodrow Wilson to the faculty.
He read mathematics with Professor Peirce of Harvard University and became assistant in the office of the Nautical Almanac in Cambridge for which he prepared astronomical tables from 1855-1896.
John was a member of the Astronomische Geselschaft and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Today there is the Van Vleck Observatory at the college named for him and the Van Vleck Crater on the moon named in his honor.
He also did much of the early research on the Van Vleck family.
