Joseph first lived with his cousin Abraham Kip Van Vleck when he came to NY in 1849. After his marriage, he lived on 7th Avenue before moving to Brooklyn and then to Montclair, NJ.
Joseph was the director and officer in several mining and railroad companies.
In 1874, he was the Commissioner of Roads in Montclair.
He gave the Van Vleck Observatory to Wesleyan University in CT, in honor of his brother John.
Joseph was the director and donor of a building to the local YMCA.
He was the treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the Montclair First Congregational Church and the senior deacon at the time of his death.
