CONT
Michiel and his son Michiel were also unhappy with the way the Catholic Church influenced the lives of people and thus became wealthier.
Arras once had some fifty churches and used a quarter of the city as a cloister.
Both father and son became members of the Protestant movements. Their active participation finally lead to their beheading on the market place in Valenciennes on May 31, 1567.
The son attempted to escape on the night of March 28th into the countryside but he was discovered in a pension when he tried to get food and shelter.
Two paintings are extant from the moment of their beheadings.
