He resided in Bremen initially but moved to Emden where he bought three houses. His son Charles was disinherited because of his wasteful habits.A large percentage of the Herlin family from 1700 onward were farmers in Ostfriesland. One quarter of these were farmers by 1900.
Farms could not be divided if a family had more than one son so some males left Europe in the mid-19th century for America.
