787 * Claude Jansz. De HERLIN, LORD OF TERLINCK, GIVENCY «aus 790» , um 1545 Arras (Atrecht), Pas-de-Calais, France, 16.03.1600 Bremen, 1600 Bremen, [I5], an ardent supporter of the Protestant Reform group., merchant , N: A Bremen merchant (hoofdman), Calvinist, Some five to ten years after Michiel's beheading in 1567, Claude Herlin left the city of Rijssel (Lille), now France, where he had lived thirty years, went to Antwerp, Belgium, and remained there as a merchant. The distance between the two cities was only 50 kilometers, but Antwerp was still Protestant while his home area had been converted to Catholicism by the forces of the Spanish King Philip II.
For a time, Claude could openly confess his beliefs. His income still came from his homeland in Flanders (around Rijssel) and from two farms he acquired on the Zeeland islands in the Netherlands. (One street still bears the name of his one farm-Blauwehoeve.
CONT
Claude was forced to move again with his family from Antwerp, Belgium, to Bremen, Germany, in 1592 because the Spanish rule under Philip II expanded to this area of Europe.
Eight years later, he passed away as a well-recognized Bremen merchant.
CONT
The use of the surname "Herlyn" started back in Antwerp. The Flemish language does not employ the French pronunciation of "Herlin" but uses instead "Herlijn".
From this form it evolved into "Herlyn' when Claude and his family of seven moved to Bremen. Branches of the family removed to Holland and altered the spelling to Herlijn, Herlien, and Heerlein.
CONT
According to a woman from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, there is a magazine called the "Vlaamse Stam" in which the Herlijn surname might be mentioned or noted or in the "Antwerpen Schepenregister".
