997 Karl Ferdinand Johann EBBEKE «aus 992» , 02.04.1869 Coburg, Germany, 05.03.1955 Villach, Austria, N: Sterbeurkiunde Villach 196/1955, 1955 Villach, Austria, [I4954], N: 1890 - 1894 Handlungsgehilfe in Bremen, Importer/exporter in Shanghai, China, owner of a brick factory in Carinthia, Austria. , N: A Carl Ebbeke, born about 1870, arrived in New York on April 22, 1897, age twenty-seven. This individual could very possibly be “our Carl Ebbeke, also. Another Karl Ebbeke (perhaps the same person) arrived in the United States on November 14, 1895, married, on board the ship “Havel from Bremen. He was listed as a citizen of this country. He was accompanied by Anna Ebbeke, age twenty-four, and Frida, age ten. They, too, were citizens of this country. The ship had been built for the North German Lloyd (NDL) flag in 1890. It carried a total of 826 passengers when full. It was eventually scrapped in Italy in 1926. CONT, Karl went into the import/export business and his firm, Ebbeke and Company, was situated in Shanghai, China, at the turn of the 20th century. Shanghai was China’s largest city in southeast Kiangsu Province, one hundred and fifty miles southeast of Nanking. According to “Twentieth Century Impressions of Hongkong, Shanghai, Etc., in 1899 Messrs. Carl Ebbeke and Paul Kamp, who had been with Messrs. Overbeck & Co. for about six years, succeeded to the business and changed the name of that business to that of Ebbeke & Co. As far back as 1866 Hermann Overbeck had come to Shanghai and started a tea merchant’s and general import/export business under the name of Messrs. Overbeck & Co. In 1883, his brother Charles became a partner and Hermann left for home. The business was carried on under the old style until Charles’ death in 1899. In 1904, Ebbeke & Co. consisted of Karl Ebbeke, Kamp, Ad. Rodenbeck and N. Tungmann, according to “The Desk List, a General and Business Directory of Shanghai in that year. The new owners- Messrs. Ebbeke & Co.- extended their connections considerably and another advance was made in 1905 when they were joined by Mr. Eduard Wilkens, formerly a partner on the firm of Messrs. Shroder, Wilkens & Co. This business had gone into liquidation and part of their goodwill was transferred to Messrs. Ebbeke & Co. In 1905, Ebbeke & Co. made the news in America. The “S.S. Tacoma, a merchant ship carrying the American flag, owned by a firm in Seattle, Washington, took on board about 9,000 barrels of salt beef (some had been consumed by the ship’s crew on the voyage from Seattle) consigned by Charles Nelson & Co., San Francisco, for the purpose of carrying them to Vladivostok, Russia, then an important naval base and commissary base . This beef was purchased in America to supply the Russian city on a contract between a Russian general in Shanghai and Denby, a Russian merchant, and Ebbeke & Co., both in Shanghai, in November, 1904. The consignee of said salt beef was the Russo-China Bank in Vladivostok and Alexander Georgevitch Boulman, who was commissioned by Denby and Ebbeke & Co. to inspect the beef bought in America to be sent to Russia, to embark himself on the ship loading the meat and to deliver it to the consignee. The master of the ship had been instructed by the ship owners on January 2, 1905, that he should go to the Russian city but if there was any obstruction like ice or blockade to then proceed to Shanghai. However, he had secured a clearance paper and a bill of health for Shanghai under false pretenses. The ship sailed from Seattle on January 5, 1905, but was seized by the Japanese during the Russo-Japanese War and adjudged a prize of war when it was captured by “H.I.M man of war in the the sea about forty miles south of Shikoku Island on March 14, 1905, . CONT, Karl visited Emil Poppe (1843-1913) at Monroe Street in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, along with Dr. Christian Heinrich Schultz (1867-1943), a Berlin eye doctor, (see elsewhere) in the early 1900’s. They were off to see something of the world. At that time, Karl owned a tea plantation in Shanghai, China, before being forced to leave in 1916. He went on to Poeckau, Carinthia, Austria, where he purchased a brick factory. His partner was Emil Muehlbacher, a member of a Carinthian industrialist-family. He had a dog named “Moritz, and Carl was a “real gentleman who always had a German flag flying in front of his house (see photo) when he was at home. Karl died in Villach, Austria, today the second largest city in Carinthia in the south of Austria, at the age of eighty-five. Markus Boehm, a journalist and historia of Ebenthal, Lower Austria, provided some of this data. He believes that Reinhard Hesse in Warendorf, Germany, might be the grandson of Carl’s brother Wilhelm August (1870-1930+). ,, Boehm published an historical report: “Das Ziegelwerk im kleinen Ort Pöckau. Sonderdruck aus CARINTHIA I 2015 (205. Jahrgang), Zeitschrift für geschichtliche Landeskunde von Kärnten. Verlag des Geschichtsvereins für Kärntgen, Klagenfurt., Am 16.10.1890 erhielt er in Bremen einen 1-Jahr gültigen Pass zur Reise in das Ausland, am 17.1.1894 erhielt er einen Pass in Bremen für Frankreich.
