992 Friedrich (Frederic) Arend EBBE(C)KE «aus 994» , 18.06.1827 Bremen, N: #659/1827, Seite 327., 23.08.1904 Lindenfels, Odenwald, Germany, 1904 Bremen, Riensberger Cemetery, G 78, Class 3, N: Grabstelle Y1007A, [I6075], learned business in Bremen , N: learned business in Bremen, merchant and trader, Consul from Bremen to Jamaica. , N: Kaufmann aus Kingston, Jamaica um 1870, Consul in Kingston. CONT, Mail from Donald C. Poppe, 2013:, Friedrich Arend was born at 11 A.M. on June 18, 1827, at Herrlichkeit #14, Bremen, the son of Christian August (1798-1847) and Marie Ebbeke, nee Poppe (1804-1827+). He was born on the same day as Johann Christian Wilhelm Poppe (1827-1871), the son of Arend Poppe (1775-1841). His father was twenty-nine and his mother was twenty-two when he was born. Dr. Lure assisted at the birth. He was baptized on September 14, 1827, the Reverend Dr. Kottmeier officiating. The offspring of brothers Johann Georg (1769-1826) and Arend Poppe (1775-1841) lived next door to one another at 14 and 16 Herrlichkeit in the early 19th century. Maria Poppe (1816-1823) died at #16 in 1823, four years before Friedrich was born. “Fritz, as he was known, married Alice Hermine Marie “Hannah Hausmann, who was not born in Bremen. Out of this union there were nine children. It was "Fritz" who gave Emil Poppe credit when Emil embarked for New York City in March of 1864. Emil, however, never used it. He and his family resided at Bahnhofsplatz #7, Bremen (1870), Osterdeich #5 (1900), and at Dobben #102, Contor Hutfilterstrasse 3, Contor Sogestrasse 15a (1885, 1891). “Fritz was a merchant in Kingston, Jamaica, an island nation in the West Indies about 480 miles south of Florida. It is the third lagest island in the Caribbean Sea. Kingston is the capital, largest city, and chief port. An inquiry was made in 1995 about “Fritz in Jamaica but a reply a year later stated that nothing was found. According to the British Foreign Office on June 23, 1856, “The Queen (of England) (Victoria) has also been pleased to approve of Mr. Frederick Arend Ebbeke as Consul at Kingston, Jamaica, for the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.8, Another source states that Frederick Arend served as JP Consul for Prussia to Jamaica.9He resided at the Kingston Sailors Home there from July 9, 1866, through October, 1867, according to the “Jamaica Gleaner, a newspaper established in 1834 in Jamaica. This institution, founded in 1864 for the relief of members of the Royal and Mercantile Marines, was maintained by yearly subscriptions from the merchants and other leading members of the community and for some years prospered. In 1879, it was discovered that subscriptions were no longer adequate, and a law was enacted whereby the Government grants were to double those of voluntary subscriptions. CONT, In “Prince Alfred’s (Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900)) Visit to Jamaica, page 45, there is this notation stating that F.A. Ebbeke, Esq., was a steward at the Ball for His Royal Highness Prince Alfred on the occasion of His Visit to Jamaica.10, In 1871, he signed the marriage declaration of Wilhelmine Poppe (1848-after 1908) and Carl Habich (1835-before 1910). When the oldest of his four daughters, Johanna Wilhelmine Christine Ebbeke, was married in May of 1886 to Christioph Hugo Poppe (1857-c.1917), her cousin, “Fritz gave his daughter 100.000 marks in marriage, according to “Minna Poppe, nee Andre (1835-1888). In another letter of 1900 to Emil Poppe (1843-1913), Gustav Muller (1844-1925+), his cousin, wrote, “the close relatives in Bremen are Cousin “Fritz Ebbeke..., In 1904, Johanna Schultz, Minna’s sister, wrote, “His son is incurable in the madhouse...Fritz suffered terribly, especially when the son suddenly became ill with this unfortunate sickness. He (Fritz) aged so much that you could hardly recognize him. He went to visit his son often; the mother never went; she does not have much heart., Before his death he, along with Johann Georg Poppe, administered the Poppe Family Foundation, which was ultimately distributed on July 1, 1911, after their passing. CONT, There is also a reference on the Internet to Ebbeke and Company, auctioneers, of Peru 080, Buenos Aires, Mulhall (1885), and another to Ebbeke and Company in Shanghai (1904). He died at the age of seventy-seven in Odenwald, Germany, a vast upland forest area occupying almost all of the southernmost part of Hessen and extending into Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg. 11, He had been visiting there, seeking help for his paralyzed leg. Here he became ill and his wife and children rushed to his side. Unexpectedly, he improved and was planning to return to Bremen. His wife and children returned home only to learn that he had died from a blood clot at the age of seventy-seven. According to Johanna Schultz’s letter of December 15, 1904, “The poor, rich man died away from home, only surrounded by strangers. I don’t understand why his wife didn’t stay with him through his illness. She does not miss anything at home; all the children are gone. A happy family life was lacking there; everybody went his own way., Perhaps “Fritz’s extra marital affairs had something to do with his wife’s seeming indifference. According to Johanna Schultz, “Fritz left an estate of 8000.000 marks. His children did not get the capital, only the grandchildren. Each child got 40.000 in interest every year; his wife 35.000 marks and the family home. He was interred on August 29, 1904, in the Riensberg Friedhof, 69a AA, Class 2, a private cemetery established in 1875 in Schwachhausen, a district in Bremen, Germany, today with over 3500 inhabitants. 12, His wife was later buried there also. In 1952, his remains were excavated and cremated and interred in Y, 1007th. CONT, Spouse: Alice Hermine Marie "Hannah" Hausmann13,14,15,4,5, Birth: 18 Jun 1839, Philadelphia, PA, Death: 23 Feb 1913, Coburg, Bavaria, Germany, CONT, Alice, the mother of nine, passed away in Coburg, Germany, on February 23, 1913, some nine years after her husband at the age of seventy-three years, eight months. Alice and her husband Fritz are interred in the same cemetery in Bremen. She was buried on February 28, 1913, in AA 69B, Class 2. In 1952, her remains were unearthed and cremated and buried in 1007 Y. Nothing else is known about her. Both births are notified on the same page one after the other.
It was “Fritz who gave Emil Poppe credit when Emil embarked for NYC in 1864. He and his family resided at Bahnhofsplatz 7, Osterdeich 5 and at Dobben 102, Bremen. On June 23, 1856, “The Queen (of England) has also been pleased to approve of Mr. Frederick Arend Ebbeke as Consul at Kingston, Jamaica, for the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
