Georg Poppe, Stadtbaumeister, war sein Taufpate, A German ship’s captain and part owner of ships, Johann Georg often came to America on his vessels and, as a free mason, entered a South Carolina lodge in 1846.
When the blockade of the Danish Navy occured in 1848, it necessitated the first German Navy. Admiral Karl Brommy, 1804-1860, was the first German fleet admiral and in June of 1850 he commanded a fleet of 7 ships, 60 officers and seamen. When the blockade ended in 1853, both the German fleet and Brommy’s career came to an abrupt end.
Joh. Georg had a one-quarter interest in the barque “Coriolan�. It was a barque that was constructed in Kennebunk, Maine, in 1850. IIt was acquired by Bremen interests shortly after being launched and first arrived in New York City from Bremen in late September 1850. It arrived there again in 1863 and on July 7, 1869. From about 1865 on it was owned by the Bremen firm of F. Reck and Company.
Joh. Georg captained the “New York� built for Anton Papendiek, Bremen, in which he had an interest; the barque was built by Hermann Friedrich Ulrichs (1809-1865) on his Vegesack shipyard.
