3418 Johann (John) Hinrich SENGSTAKE «aus 3417» , 1849 Savannah, Georgia, N: Chatham County, 1904 Bremen?, [I7349], a noted African-American publisher , N: teacher, publisher and Congregational minister, Johann (John) was not an ordinary German immigrant although he was a direct descendant of Claus Sengstake (1655-1688) of Oberneuland near Bremen.
Although European in appearance, he was the son of a white father, a well-to-do German sea captain who had been plying the lucrative Bremen-Savannah run, and a former slave woman. In 1847, his father, Hermann Hinrich, had seen the plight of a slave girl named Tama Williams on the seller’s block. out of compassion, he purchased her on the spot and later married her.
Following her death, John and his sister, Mary Elisabeth, were raised by relatives in Germany. When John returned to Savannah in 1869, he in turn fell in love with and married a former slave, Flora Butler Abbott, a widow with a one-year-old son.
This boy in time adopted the name of Robert Sengstacke Abbott.

Flora, the former wife of Thomas Abbott, had acquired a speaking knowledge of German from immigrant shopkeepers for whom she had frequently worked, and it was not long before this ability brought her to John Sengstake’s attention.
A hairdresse in the Savannah Theater, she was born to Portuguese West African-born parents. Her father Jacob Butler had been a skilled craftsman
Following her first husband’s death in 1869, she was “rescued� from custody proceedings instituted by Thomas’ family by John Hermann Henry Sengstacke who hired a white lawyer who secured a restraining order.
John Hermann Henry then married Flora in 1874 and they had seven offspring.
