4062 Reverend Jacob Van VLECK , 24.03.1751 New York, Kings County, NY, 03.07.1831 Bethlehem, Northampton County, PA, 1831 PA?, [I642], N: Moravian theological seminary, Germany, N: Moravian bishop, violinist, and organist; first American-born Moravian to be an active composer, Jacob began his career, laboring among the young men of the church in Bethlehem, Pa, and eventually was appointed secretary of the provincial or governing board.
In 1789, he returned to Germany as a delegate of the general synod.
On returning the next year, he accepted the principalship of the girls' boarding-school in Bethlehem, which position he resigned when he was appointed senior pastor of the church there.
Later he served as pastor in Nazareth, PA, as principal of the boys' boarding-school, and as pastor of the Lititz, PA, church.
On May 7, 1815, he was consecrated to the episcopacy at Bethlehem, having been selected president of the executive board of the southern province.
He continued in this post until 1822 when ill health forced him to retire.
