4067 Captain Abraham Van VLECK «aus 4037» , 02.02.1755 Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY, 19.11.1836 LaGrange, Dutchess Cy., NY, [I2442], Captain of local Miltia , N: Veteran of the American Revolution, Abraham enlisted in the Fishkill volunteer militia when the Revolationary War began, Like other enlistments, his was for special forays as the need arose to put down Tory uprisings, to patrol the roads for Tory spying and raiders, and engaging British troops, etc., Some of these were of short duration and when completed, the militia was discharged and the men returned home until the next urgency. These early volunteer militia were organized and led by local prominent men to defend the region, who mustered supllies whenever they could, but financed much themselves. Veterans of the French and Indian Wars trained them and became officers themselves.
He was given the rank of captain of the local militia after the war.
